Roadworks begin near Wilderness

28 November 2017

The Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) has started the rehabilitation of Main Road 352 (Hoekwil Road) and Main Road 355 (Saasveld Road) near Wilderness. This R102 million project is expected to have been completed in mid-2019.

These single carriageway roads were last refurbished in 1995. The project is required as the pavements on these roads have reached the end of their design lives. The project will also address a slip failure on Saasveld Road which is hazardous. The project will include the construction of bus stops and sidewalks in Touwsranten.

Half-width construction (involving the closure of one lane) will take place in sections with stop/ go controls to manage the flow of traffic. Motorists can expect a 15-minute waiting period at stop/ go points. DTPW is aware that delays are frustrating, but some inconvenience during construction is inevitable. Motorists will soon be able to enjoy a safer and more pleasant travelling experience on this road.

DTPW is committed to creating short-term Expanded Public Works Programme employment and skills training opportunities. During the course of this project, a total of R14 million will be spent on targeted enterprises, R4 million on targeted local labour and 32 000 person-days of work will be created for people from the George municipal area.

The high-quality road infrastructure that DTPW provides is an important component of a safe and effective transport system, and an enabler of economic and social development in the Western Cape.
