EMS Alert: Severe Motor Vehicle Accidents in Cape Town

Western Cape Government Health's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) rescue unit responded to two serious accidents over the weekend and this morning.

Saturday, 2 June 2012 - At 22:51 near Marula Circle, Kraaifontein - One (adult male) driver lost his life after a head-on collision between his vehicle and a bakkie. EMS Rescuers had to free the man from the wreckage with aid of the Jaws of Life. He was declared dead on arrival by emergency medical practitioners on the scene. The front seated passenger (adult male) suffered an intense wound to the head and possible fracture to the leg. The driver of the bakkie (adult male) was coded serious by paramedics. The survivors of the accident were transported to Tygerberg Hospital and Kraaifontein Community Health Centre (CHC) by EMS and Netcare ambulance.

Monday, 4 June 2012 - At 05:03 on Newmarket Street, Woodstock - EMS Rescuers used the Jaws of Life to extricate a driver (adult male) from the remains of his car after he crashed into a streetlamp. He was declared deceased shortly after removal. Rescuers reported that the vehicle was severely damaged. Two passengers (adult male) were coded critical by paramedics after they sustained grave head wounds and possible spinal injuries and one (adult male) was coded serious. Patients were transported to New Somerset Hospital by EMS and Netcare ambulance.
