Premier Zille Launches 110% Green Campaign on World Environment Day

4 June 2012

Today, Tuesday, 5 June, also World Environment Day, Premier Helen Zille launched the 110% Green campaign, a catalytic initiative of the Western Cape Government to advance its efforts to make the province the green economy hub of South Africa. The campaign launch was announced by Premier Zille in her State of the Province Address in February and today she unveiled 30 flagship companies who are already implementing sustainability principles and will help promote the campaign.

The theme for World Environment Day this year, as set by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is "Green Economy: Does it include you?". The UNEP defines a green economy as one which is "low carbon, resource efficient and socially inclusive" and the campaign launched today aims to mobilise citizens across the Western Cape to join the movement to "go green" with the slogan "COMMIT, ACT, IMPACT".

Premier Zille made a call to action for individuals and organisations across the province to take a first step by joining the 110% Green Facebook fanpage and continue to build a critical mass of active citizens who make the shift to "go green".
