Roadworks begin on the R45 between Paarl and Malmesbury

The Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) has started maintenance work on the R45 between Paarl and Malmesbury. This R32 million project is expected to have been completed in mid-2018.

The road was last refurbished in 1981. The current surface is deteriorating, exhibiting stone loss and cracking, and allowing water to enter the pavement structure. This has necessitated frequent patching. The maintenance will take the form of re-sealing the road, thereby extending the life of the existing pavement structure. The project will include repairs to damaged culvert inlet and outlet structures; installation of edge-beams at selected accesses; and new road markings.

Half-width construction (involving the closure of one lane) will take place in sections with stop/ go controls to manage the flow of traffic. Motorists can expect a 15-minute waiting period at stop/ go points. DTPW is aware that delays are frustrating, but some inconvenience during construction is inevitable. Motorists will soon be able to enjoy a safer and more pleasant travelling experience on this road.

DTPW is committed to creating short-term Expanded Public Works Programme employment and skills training opportunities. During the course of this project, a total of R4,8 million will be spent on targeted enterprises and 5 500 person-days of work will be created for people from the Drakenstein and Swartland local municipal areas.
