Improving child pedestrian safety in Vredendal and Lutzville

16 October 2017

This week, the Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) and Matzikama Municipality implemented the “Paint a Pedestrian Crossing” project at a number of primary and pre-primary schools in Vredendal and Lutzville. This project forms part of October Transport Month and is aimed at creating safer, more walkable communities in the Upper West Coast region.

West Coast DTPW road safety officer Lizel Plaatjies says a number of learners in these communities are exposed to vehicles when walking to school.

“We are hoping that improvements to road markings at these designated crossings will encourage more people to use them. Improved infrastructure will also support road safety education and awareness activities at these schools. This will go a long way to contributing to child pedestrian safety,” she said.

When DTPW needs assessments identify infrastructural hazards to road safety, the Department works with municipalities to remedy these shortcomings. Hazards such as a lack of adequate road signs and markings can then quickly be addressed to make roads safer for pedestrians.

As part of this month’s #SaveKidsLives initiative, we are encouraging people to model good pedestrian behaviour for children so that they learn good road habits. Together, we can set a good example for children by consistently adhering to the rules of the road.
