Update on Uniondale roadworks

A plan is in place to make up for lost time on a R77 million Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) project to reseal two sections of the R399 near Uniondale in the Little Karoo. Work started in September 2016 and is expected to have been completed in December 2017.

The project entails surface and base patch repairs as well as cold in-situ recycling of large areas. A 14 mm rubber modified single seal will complete the resealing process. The project team will also convert stone stormwater culverts into concrete ones. The asphalt patching work is now complete, and work in progress includes base recycling, and the upgrading of culvert structures.

Stop/ go closures are currently in place. During the day, motorists can expect to have to wait between 5 and 15 minutes at these controls. We thank motorists for their patience during construction. Some inconvenience is inevitable, but the end result will be a better and safer road.

The project is creating a number of short-term job and skills development opportunities. To date, R7,5 million has been spent on local labour while 21 094 person-days of work have been created for local people.

The high-quality road infrastructure that the Department provides is an important component of a safe and effective transport system, and an enabler of economic and social development in the Western Cape.
