Activities to promote seatbelt usage in the Western Cape

12 September 2017

The Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) and its road safety partners are hosting various “Buckle Up” seatbelt awareness activities across the Western Cape. The message is simple – “wearing a seatbelt could be the difference between life and death”.

During an awareness activity held at the Tygerberg Hospital entrance in Cape Town today (12 September 2017), road safety officials observed that a number of vehicle occupants are not strapped in as the law requires. Officials had to ask people to buckle up, including their children.

We thank all drivers and passengers who always wear seatbelts, even on the shortest journey. The public’s support can make this campaign go a long way, increase awareness, and save lives. We want everyone to remember that it is not just your own life you are protecting when you do the right thing by buckling up. In a collision, an unrestrained passenger becomes a high-speed projectile, endangering everyone inside the vehicle. It prevents needless tragedy when we take positive action towards road safety for all. It only takes a second to save a life, so buckle up, front and back, on every trip.

Post your photos of yourself and others wearing seatbelts to @WCGovSafelyHome using the hashtag #AlwaysBuckleUp
