MOD Production delights audience

13 July 2017

On Wednesday, 12 July 2017, 85 learners from the Mass participation; Opportunity and access; Development and growth (MOD) Programme thrilled their audience with their display of skills in a production titled “Hats and Tales” at the Bellville Civic Theatre.

This was a MOD Programme and Neighbourhood Schools production that displayed the talent and skills learned by the programme’s developing artists. These programmes are run by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) as part of the after-school programme. Staff members from the Sport Development Directorate worked with the learners to put the production together.

Brent Walters, Head of Department at DCAS, welcomed the audience before the start of the production. He emphasized the value of arts and culture in communities where youth are faced with many social challenges. “This kind of production is about creating hope and sharing values. It is showing that, despite our challenges, we will not surrender. We will rise above our circumstances and show that the arts have a way of bringing hope. Tonight is the culmination of months of hard work by these young people – it is a journey of growth and personal development for them.” he said.

The learners entertained the audience with a range of skills, including singing, dancing, juggling, kata and poetry. After the show Anroux Marais, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, congratulated the learners on their performance. “You amazed me with what you did tonight. You are world class performers and we want to encourage you to grow your talents and aim for the world stages.” she said.

Through the after-school programme, DCAS offers youth opportunities to stay engaged in positive ways after school hours. Communities should support the programme and encourage youth to participate. Let us develop our youth’s talent BETTER TOGETHER.
