MEDIA ALERT: Minister Plato celebrates youth transformation through Chrysalis Academy’s photographic exhibition

Today, Tuesday 20 June 2017, Western Cape Minister of Community Safety, Dan Plato, will continue the Department’s various Youth Month celebrations by visiting the Chrysalis Academy’s Youth Month Photographic Exhibition at the Artscape Theatre.

The photographic exhibition, which runs up to 2 July 2017, showcases the transformational journey of Chrysalis Academy’s students over its 3-month programme. It is hosted in partnership with the Cape Town Photo Club, who has generously volunteered their time and expertise to provide a series of workshops to Chrysalis Academy students and staff in the art of photography.

Minister Plato will be joined at the exhibition by Chrysalis Academy CEO, Lucille Meyer, as well as students and instructors from the Academy who have their work displayed.

Photography has proven to be an exceptional medium for self-expression amongst all age groups. The exhibition celebrates the perspective of youth, their longing for beauty, healing and stillness and the powerful influence of the arts on their lives. The photographs also provide a rare window into the academy’s holistic approach to youth development and its four-phased programme.

The Chrysalis Academy is based at the foot of the picturesque Constantiaberg Mountain in Tokai and offers a 3-month residential youth development programme for young people of the Western Cape. Since 2000, the Academy have worked with over 8,000 young men and women, aged 18 to 25.

There will be an opportunity for photographs and interviews and the exhibition on display is free of charge.
