Minister Carlisle Dedicates 67 Minutes to Newlands Train Station Refurbishment
Minister of Transport and Public Works Robin Carlisle, local Ward Councillor Ian Iversen, and Metrorail Strategic Operations Manager Eddie Chinnappen, dedicated their 67 minutes to painting over graffiti at the Newlands Train Station today. This was in commemoration of former President Nelson Mandela's 94th Birthday.
The Newlands' Residents Association had lodged a complaint regarding the prevalence of graffiti at the Newlands train station. Councillor Iversen heeded Minister Carlisle's call for participation in the endeavour to address this problem, and together decided to take action on this very significant day.
"It is very important for the community to get involved in ensuring that their facilities are well maintained and kept at the necessary standard. This is a good thing that we are doing here today and I am glad that Councillor Iversen could join us in spreading this message on International Nelson Mandela Day," said Minister Carlisle.
He then went on to board the train at Newlands Station, en route to Cape Town station, and assisted Mr Chinnappen in conducting ticket inspections on the carriages and listened to various complaints from commuters.
"The main issues that commuters highlighted were train delays, security and overcrowding in carriages. These are issues that Metrorail remains committed to addressing," added Minister Carlisle.
