‘Sharing our Stories’ on International Archives Day

12 June 2017

During the afternoon of 9 June 2017, the Western Cape Archives and Records Service of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) celebrated  International Archives Day with learners from the DCAS Mass participation; Opportunity and access; Development and growth (MOD) Programme at 72 Roeland Street in Cape Town.

The theme for 2017 is Archives, Citizenship and Interculturalism. A chat group was created for the learners to share their stories about their diverse backgrounds with each other. Archives team members Amy Van Wezel, Thando Bukwana, Maxwell Mxunyelwa and Amanda Mdawe gently nudged the learners to open up about the history of their own communities and also touched on previous generations by explaining family trees.

The learners from Oval North, Tuscany Glen and Langa High Schools afterwards participated in an exciting tour through the building and attended demonstrations on how to use the archives.

Project Manager Amy van Wezel stressed the value of inspiring and helping learners from different backgrounds to find out where they come from. “I want them to learn a little bit about themselves and each other in an understanding environment”, she said.

The Archives connects people, places and cultures. Let’s preserve our rich history for present and future generations – BETTER TOGETHER.
