Minister addresses Women in Safety Breakfast

5 June 2017

The Western Cape Minister of Social Development, Albert Fritz, began his Youth Month commemorations today by addressing the Women in Safety Breakfast in Mitchells Plain.

The event was organized by the City of Cape Town, and was attended by approximately 100 women representing various safety structures within Mitchells Plain.

Minister Fritz was joined by Minister of Community Safety, Dan Plato, and City of Cape Town MAYCO member, Cllr. Eddie Andrews, and Ward 43 Councillor, Elton Jansen.

Minister Fritz used his address to celebrate the women who volunteer their time and expertise to improve their community’s safety, and paid tribute to the young women who had also joined the structures.

He further reiterated the call for people to play an active role in child protection, and volunteer as Safety Parents. “Each of you here can open up your homes, and after vetting and screening from our social workers, can qualify to become DSD Safety Parents”, said Minister Fritz.

A Safety Parent is a person over the age of 18 years, who has been recruited, screened and trained to provide emergency care and protection within the community and within a family context, to vulnerable children.

There are currently 646 active Safety Parents in the province.

“We can stop the violence and murder of children and youth if we all play a part in creating the sort of stable, loving and caring family spaces which are so sorely needed in communities”, said Minister Fritz.

He went on to say, “It is going to take a whole of society effort to combat violence against women and children. We are all mourning for 33-year old Unathi Booi, who was found murdered in Langa, and 5-year old Minentle Lekhaka. I strongly condemn their murders, enough is enough”.
