DCAS Drama Competition Touched Hearts At Suidoosterfees

2 May 2017

On 28 April 2017 the Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais named African Calling with “Question Mark” as the best Tri-District Drama Production for 2016/17.

The initial talent search of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and various drama showcases in the Overberg, Cape Winelands and Eden districts were followed by a higher level of exposure at the Baxter’s Zabalasa Festival and the KKNK.  Aspiring stars from Swellendam, Barrydale, Zwelethemba, Nqubela, Knysna and Dysselsdorp had the opportunity to compete at the 2017 Suidoosterfees in Cape Town.

African Calling from Nqubela received their own production slot for 30 April and performed their grand finale in the professional environment of the Artscape Arena. The next highlight will be the showcase of the unique talents of Ayden October from Swellendam and Karabo Salman from Nqubela later this year in an episode of Suidooster, the DSTV soapie.

Minister Marais, accompanied by the Director for Arts, Culture and Language Jane Moleleki, ATKV Managing Director Deidre Le Hanie and Suidoosterfees CEO Niël Rademan, acknowledged the hard work of the talented participants by handing over awards and certificates after the competition at Artscape.

DCAS, with the support of our partners, aims to grow our next generation of theatre stars through festivals – BETTER TOGETHER.
