The Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais handed over R525 000 in funding to various West Coast Sport federations on 25 April 2017. The event was hosted by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and took place at the Moorreesburg Town Hall.
For the 2017/18 financial year, a total of 13 federations received funding from DCAS as part of the department’s commitment to develop sporting talent in the Western Cape. The following clubs also received sporting equipment, as part of the club development programme: Diazville Cycling Club, Moorreesburg Kickboxing, Steynville Cycling Club and Vredendal Kickboxing.
West Coast District Municipality Mayor, Harold Cleophas welcomed the federation representatives and DCAS staff to the handover.
In her key note address Minister Marais said the department is delighted to hand over the funds to the West Coast District. ”Sports can give hope where at one time there was only despair. This allocation will undoubtedly promote sport and contribute to the reconciliation and development of communities in the Western Cape,” said Minister Marais.
Jerome Arendse from the West Coast Sport Council thanked the department for the contribution to growing sport in the West Coast district. Sport codes such as Darts, Athletics, Gymnastics, Kickboxing, Netball, Pool, Bowls, Angling and Table Tennis have all benefited from the funding.
This concludes the ceremonial cheque handovers which took place in the all districts of the province, with the department investing over R4 million in sport federations.
DCAS provides support through funding to sporting federations across the province. Communities should support their local sports teams and encourage participation and growth. Let us grow our sporting talent - BETTER TOGETHER.
