Talent On Show At The Best Of DCAS Drama Programme

11 April 2017

On Friday, 7 April 2017 the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), in collaboration with Lunchbox Theatre launched the third showcase of the Best of DCAS drama programme in Oudtshoorn at the Schoemanspoort Cultural Facility.

The Programme is aimed at providing quality theatre productions to the local communities at no cost. It includes the best productions developed by participants from the DCAS drama festivals in the three districts. These productions included:

  • Moonstones GT - Unspoken words of a woman, Ubumnandi Bethu - Secret of Hatred and Cay-Cay ‘n Draaiende Wiel from the Eden Drama Festival.
  • Most Wanted – ‘n Myl in my skoene and Net vir Pret - Logika from the Overberg Drama Festival.
  • Our hope - Brutality of the mind and African Calling - Question mark from the Cape Winelands Drama Festival.

The programme launch was directed by well-known artistic director of the Baxter Theatre, Thami Mbongo, who ensured all productions were stage ready for the showcases. He also said that the youth who conceptualised their productions at the Schoemanspoort Cultural Facility a year ago were excited to return to the facility, which had been transformed into a theatre by its staff, and show their talent to the community of Oudtshoorn.  The festival was attended by communities from as far as Dysselsdorp, Bongolethu and Bridgeton.

Director for Arts, Culture and Language Services, Ms Jane Moleleki officially opened the event and reiterated the need for audience development in the rural communities. She stated that communities also needed to be motivated to support their artists.

Chief Director Guy Redman found the productions powerful and was inspired by the artists who broke through the language barrier by performing in their mother tongue while still enabling the audience to follow and understand their amazing stories.

Transport was arranged for the community to attend the Saturday showcases on 8 April from 14:00 till 18:00.

DCAS, with the support of our partners, aims to grow our next generation of theatre stars through festivals such as these, BETTER TOGETHER.
