Province Welcomes City’s Recognition of Need To Amend Restructuring Zone

29 March 2017

The Western Cape Government welcomes the City of Cape Town’s announcement that it intends to amend its designation of restructuring zones in the Metro.

The City’s role under the Social Housing Act is to initiate, motivate and identify these Zones, as it is only within such areas that government’s social housing subsidies can be accessed.

Clearly the fact that the Western Cape Government recently highlighted the gaps and consequences of those defects in the current law, has motivated the City’s understanding of the urgent need for these changes.

We are aware that the proposed amendments have been mooted for some years now, but to date the City has not  formally identified any new Zones within the Metro, nor have these been gazetted by the national minister.

We look forward to this process now being implemented. We are glad that we could be of assistance.

Once these amendments are achieved it will enable affordable housing initiatives by our government in areas currently falling outside these Zones, such as Green Point, to  benefit from the state grants provided for under this Act.
