Caledon drunk driver arrested for being four times over the legal limit

According to a preliminary report from Western Cape Provincial Traffic Services, seven fatalities were recorded on Western Cape roads this past weekend. Of the seven fatalities, two were drivers and another two were pedestrians.

Over the weekend, Provincial Traffic Services conducted a total of 25 alcohol blitz operations and stopped a total of 2076 vehicles. Provincial traffic officers arrested 20 motorists for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol on the 24th  and 25th of March 2017, after screening 1 443 drivers.

The highest breath alcohol reading of 1.06 mg/ 1000 ml was recorded in the Caledon service area. This was four times the legal limit of 0,24 mg/ 1 000 ml.

Two other persons were arrested for various transgressions including a driver who was found in possession of false documentation, and another arrested for excessive speeding.

191 speeding offences were recorded, with 251 fines issued for various violations amounting to R308 650. 
The highest speeds recorded were:

• 180 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell service area.
• 133 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N1 in the Laingsburg service area.
• 104 km/h in a 80 km/h zone on the N1 in the Laingsburg service area.
