Michael Mapongwana CDC Maternal and Child Health Unit Opening

7 March 2017

Due to the ever increasing number of patients, space constraints and less than desirable working conditions, the Western Cape Government Health decided to upgrade the Maternity Health Unit at Michael Mapongwana Community Day Centre. These conditions had led to poor patient flow and negative patient experience, which also impacted negatively on quality service delivery.

Western Cape Minister of Health, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo officially opened the newly refurbished Maternal and Child Health Unit at Michael Mapongwana Community Day Centre (MCHU) today.

“Our focus this year is patient centred care and ensuring that our patients receive quality healthcare in all corners of the province. This new Maternal Health Unit is a response to the health needs of this community and we strive for better patient experience in all our facilities;” said Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, Western Cape Health Minister.

The new establishment of the Michael Mapongwana Maternal and Child Health Unit was in response to public, staff and management raising service delivery challenges experienced at the previously small Child Health Unit.

In order to create space, the unit was integrated with the MOU to become a Maternal and Child Health Unit.

The MCHU unit was completed in September 2016, and its doors were open to the public December 2016.

The unit has eight rooms to accommodate all the required services for Pediatrics. This new facility will improve mother and child experience.

The monthly total primary health care headcount at Michael Mapongwana Community Day Centre is between 27 000 and 30 000 patients over five years. Under five years is approximately 2 500. This is approximately 1500 patients being serviced at the facility on a daily basis.

The Maternal and Child Health Unit offers the following services:

• Comprehensive MCWH Care.
• Nutrition
• PMTCT and HAST Care
• Immunisations
• Counselling and support
• Oral Rehydration
• Dispensing relevant Medication
• BANC and Post Natal Care
