Electrical services installation in Montagu

10 February 2017

Good progress has been made on a 36-month Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) contract to rehabilitate and upgrade various sections of the R60 and R62 between Ashton and Montagu through Cogmanskloof. Work on the R583 million contract is expected to have been completed in the third quarter of 2018.

As part of the new electrical services being installed in Long Street, cables must be laid from the mini-substation on Kohler Street to Barry Street in phases.

The details of necessary road closures are as follows:

  1. Phase 1: Monday, 13 February 2017: sleeve installation in the southern half of Long Street at the Kohler Street intersection.
  2. Phase 2: Tuesday, 14 February 2017: sleeve installation in the northern half of Long Street at the Kohler Street intersection.
  3. Phase 3: Wednesday and Thursday, 15 and 16 February 2017: sleeve installation across Kohler Street (northern leg of the intersection with Long Street).
  4. Phase 4: Monday, 20 February 2017: sleeve installation across Church Street (northern leg of the intersection with Long Street).

During Phases 1 and 2, a short stop-go closure will be in place in Long Street to allow alternating two-way traffic.

During Phase 3, access to Kohler Street from Long Street will be closed. Motorists will have to find an alternative route to Bath Street so that they can turn into Kohler Street from there.

During Phase 4, access to Church Street from Long Street will be closed. Motorists will have to find an alternative route to Bath Street and turn into Church Street from there.

Cables will also be laid in the northern sidewalk of Long Street between Barry Street and Kohler Street. The construction team will visit affected properties individually to inform residents of disruptions to their points of access.

The high-quality road infrastructure that DTPW provides in Montagu and elsewhere is an important component of a safe and effective transport system, and an enabler of economic and social development in the Western Cape.
