Traffic officer students to support festive season law enforcement

7 December 2016

On 12 December 2016, a total of 20 traffic officer students will be deployed at various Western Cape traffic centres to gain practical experience during December and January. They are currently undergoing a 12-month traffic officers’ training course at the Gene Louw Traffic College in Brackenfell, Cape Town. Their efforts will assist law enforcement officials to keep road users safe during this festive season.

Five will be deployed at Brackenfell Provincial Traffic Centre; four at Somerset West; two at Worcester; two at Vredendal; one at Laingsburg; and one at George. In addition, two will be deployed at Eden District Municipality, one at Breede Valley Municipality; one at Hessequa Municipality; and one at Mbhashe Municipality in the Eastern Cape.

Since August 2016, the trainees have been receiving firearm competency training, driver training (including articulated motor vehicle and motorcycle training), first aid training, and training in fighting fires. Their training includes being deployed at various traffic centres to gain practical experience.

The festive season is a time of year when traffic officers have their hands full because of the large numbers of vehicles on our roads. It is important that effective traffic policing is in place to help ensure that public transport vehicles are in a roadworthy condition, that drivers meet the legal fitness requirements, and, most importantly, that public transport users can travel safely to their destinations.

Road users can expect a heavy law enforcement presence during the festive season to keep us all safe.
