On 5 December 2016, the Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Anroux Marais donated 150 mattresses from the Melkbos Cultural Facility to the Haven Night Shelter. The mattresses were being replaced in line with sustainable maintenance routine and the manager at the cultural centre, Mandy Magerman, arranged for the recycling of the used mattresses to the Malmesbury, Bellville and Woodstock branches of the shelter.
The mattresses were gratefully received by the CEO of the Haven Night Shelter, Mr Hassan Khan, who said that the 15 shelters across the province are pipelines to the poor. He explained that the non-profit welfare organisation provides temporary shelter, physical care, social welfare and family re-unification services to homeless adults.
Minister Marais thanked the Haven for making a difference in the lives of so many people and, while handing over the mattresses, wished everybody working and living at the various branches of the shelter as well as those in the audience a very special festive season.
Melkbos Cultural Centre is one of the seven facilities of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) that are managed by the Western Cape Cultural Commission (WCCC), with the facilities used by groups who invest in the promotion and preservation of arts and culture.
