Central Karoo Abuzz With Launch Of Sport Academy

30 November 2016

On Saturday 26 November 2016, the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport partnered by the Western Cape Provincial Sports Confederation and the Central Karoo Sports Council hosted the launch of the District Academy of Sports (DAS) at the Karoo Park Recreation Club in Beaufort West.

The historic event celebrated the fourth district academy to be established in the Western Cape since 2012, with 54 learners awarded Central Karoo District colours for athletics, football, hockey, netball, rugby and tennis.

Keynote speaker, 2008 SA Hockey Olympian Vida Ryan, delivered an inspiring message of hope and how to reach your dreams. “The district academy is a beacon of hope and light to a community stricken with unemployment, poverty and abuse against woman and children. Hope shines the brightest in the darkest hour,” she said.

The athletes were also encouraged by Junior National Schools Netball star Githe Stander who spoke boldly about two topics close to her heart: the stumbling blocks that one might experience in one’s sport career, and pressing on through difficult times and circumstances. Stander explained that through sport you can overcome difficult situations at home and work towards a better life for yourself and your family. She encouraged students to use the opportunity that the Academy of Sport offers to achieve their goals and dreams.

Through hard work and sport initiatives such as this, DCAS offers communities the opportunity to realise their sporting dreams. BETTER TOGETHER.
