Physically-Challenged Housing Recipients Celebrate In Bongolethu, Oudtshoorn

17 November 2016

Residents of Bongolethu, Oudtshoorn celebrated when receiving their long awaited homes from Western Cape Human Settlements Minister Bonginkosi Madikizela on 15 November. Among the housing recipients were physically challenged Mr David Jansen and Ms Nomayeza Banjatwa who suffers from impaired hearing. The elderly Ms Roseline Pockpas also celebrated when opening the door to her new home.

“We are here today to celebrate – it is indeed a joyful occasion” Madikizela said when addressing the gathering. “Let us please not sell our houses” the Minister added, reflecting on a visit in the area earlier the day. “I’ve just come from a visit where one house was sold to two people” said Madikizela. Executive Mayor Colan Sylvester of Oudtshoorn Municipality reiterated the Minister’s message and further encouraged housing recipients to ensure they have a will and testament in place once taking occupation of their homes. “The Will helps us to ensure your house goes to the right place when you are no longer there” said Mayor Sylvester.

The housing recipients are among more than 50 residents who received their homes in the project in Bongolethu, Oudtshoorn. These houses are part of a bigger project that will yield about 150 Breaking New Ground (BNG) houses, (ie. formerly referred to as RDP),  in different areas of Oudtshoorn.

The handover is a particular reflection of the Department’s prioritisation of the most needy in housing delivery.
