Paralympians Bid Farewell as they Board the Plane to Rio

Fans of South Africa’s Paralympians showed up in great numbers at the Cape Town International Airport on Tuesday 30 August 2016 to, together with the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), bid farewell to the athletes on the eve of their departure for the Paralympic Games in Rio.

Enthusiasm reigned across the airport, with children and adults flying the South African flag in honour of these great men and women, expressing pride in their country and the achievements of its people.

One of the athletes, Justine Asher, was thrilled about the challenge ahead. “I am so excited to be leaving Cape Town for Rio today with this magnificent send-off from the Western Cape,” she said. “I am excited about racing in Rio and hopefully bringing back gold for South Africa.”

Minister Anroux Marais addressed the athletes and spoke words of encouragement. “Thank you to each and every one of you, and I hope you realise how proud we are of you. I know you will bring back the gold. Please go have fun!” said Minister Marais.
