Minister Grant condemns fatal shooting of Metrorail train driver

12 July 2016

Statement by Donald Grant, Minister of Transport and Public Works

I received distressing news of a fatal shooting of Metrorail Western Cape train driver at Netreg Station on 11 July 2016, with shock. We express our condolences to the family and colleagues of the slain driver.

It is unacceptable that hardworking train drivers should be targeted as they execute their duties. Metrorail employees have expressed concern about their safety in the wake of the incident and some drivers have downed tools for a short period until a safe working environment could be provided. It is encouraging to know that trains are operating on schedule today again.

The Western Cape Government condemns this incident in the strongest terms. The perpetrators of this serious crime must be made to face the full might of the law. We will support all efforts to ensure that this happens, and that these criminals are brought to book for their crimes.

Their acts have threatened the provision of public transport to the hundreds of thousands who use trains daily in and around Cape Town, and have also threatened the safety of drivers and commuters.

I have been in contact with Metrorail during the course of the morning, and we are working together to ease the burden on affected commuters until normal service is restored.

I appeal to those with information that may assist the SAPS to arrest of those responsible and investigate this crime. Criminal acts will not deter us from our commitment to safe and reliable public transport in the Western Cape.
