Library Service Successful In Their Wide Range Of Events Throughout Africa Month

Several cultural groups, films and children in the masses were some of the aspects that made Africa Month for the Library Service of the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) a great success. The Library Service rolled out various very exciting Africa Month activities at participating libraries in the Western Cape.

Africa Month was celebrated in May 2016 in partnership with DCAS, the Western Cape Government and the National Department of Arts and Culture (DAC). A range of activities were hosted by the DCAS Library Service in the build up to Africa Day, which was commemorated on 25 May 2016.

The celebrations took place throughout the month of May at the CJ Langenhoven, Dysselsdorp, Ladismith, Ceres, Tulbagh, Witzenville, Villiersdorp, Diazville, Saldanha, Struisbaai, Welverdiend, Ocean View, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek Libraries in the Western Cape.

The Africa Month programmes that were presented at the libraries were incredibly fun filled and interactive. They included craft projects such as bead and mask making as well as colouring in competitions for the younger audience. Adults were treated to screenings of African documentary films and various local cultural groups entertained audiences with their performances. One of the biggest highlights was the African storytelling by a gentleman named Monde from the Vusisizwe Community Theatre Project. He focused on the children, getting them to participate in the storytelling, asking them questions and teaching them song and dance.

By the end of Africa Month, Szerena Knapp from the DCAS Library Service said they were very satisfied with the outcome of their Africa Month activities. “It was a huge success. We reached so many more people this year than last year and the selected regions really went out of their way to participate,” she said.
