Archives Week launched for the Promotion of Human Rights and Good Governance

9 May 2016

The Provincial Archive Service of the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) launched National Archives Week on Friday 6 May 2016 at 72 Roeland Street in Cape Town.

The theme for the week of 9 to 13 May 2016 is “Archives for the promotion of human rights, transparency and good governance”.

The Acting Head of DCAS, Dr Lyndon Bouah delivered the welcoming speech and stated that more than 10 000 visitors visit the archives annually to consult on family history and the general history of the Western Cape. He stressed the value of people understanding their family history and knowing where they are able to find their historic roots.

The Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais emphasised the importance of this week and said it “offers an opportunity to learn about the importance of preserving our history to understand and appreciate its impact on our daily lives”.

Dr Antonia Malan, researcher at the University of Cape Town, conducted the keynote address and offered an informative speech on the hard work and teamwork that goes into researching historic topics using the valuable information at the Archives.

As part of the National Archives Week, activities for the public will run every day from 09:00-15:00 at 72 Roeland Street, Cape Town and will include guided tours of the historic building, presentations and exhibitions.

National Archives Week connects people, places and cultures. Let us preserve our history for present and future generations, BETTER TOGETHER.
