Outdoor Gymnasium Handed Over to Community of Gugulethu

6 May 2016

As part of the Community Outreach Programme by the National Minister of Sport, Fikile Mbalula, the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) in partnership with the Department of Sport and Recreation (SRSA) and the City of Cape Town handed over a new sport and recreation facility, an outdoor gymnasium, at the NY144 Park in Gugulethu, Cape Town. The event took place on Thursday, 5 May 2016.

There was great excitement among members from the community that attended as a number of local clubs and schools also received sporting equipment.

DCAS Minister Anroux Marais emphasised how through sport we should embrace our diverse cultures and backgrounds. “Every champion has their beginning in their own community. You are here in an enabling environment supported by adequate and well maintained facilities. Through your participation and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, we can build a healthy nation, and we can build social inclusion and a sustainable community”, she said.

Deputy Minister of Sport Gert Oosthuizen said the roll-out of these facilities are to grant access to all in the community, and especially the children. “Today we are handing over a robust outdoor facility and we would like to see the children and the community take ownership of this facility. We would like to see an active and healthy nation, and importantly, this is how we get to know one another and build the nation of South Africa”, he said.

Communities should use these outdoor facilities to improve their health and fitness. Let us develop a healthy and active province BETTER TOGETHER.
