Africa Month Celebrations Kick Off with a Cultural Twist

3 May 2016

On Friday, 29 April 2016, the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) in partnership with the National Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) hosted the official launch of Africa Month at the Paarl East Thusong Centre in Paarl.

Africa Month will be celebrated in May 2016 with the Western Cape Government and DCAS hosting a wide range of activities in the build-up to Africa Day, which will be commemorated on 25 May 2016.

The event was open to the public and community members from Paarl and surrounding areas flocked to the venue to be a part of this special occasion. Guests were treated to a cultural experience and were entertained by the Lukhanyo Marimba Group, Indoni Dance and Leadership Academy and Die Nuwe Graskoue Trappers.

Mayor Advocate Gesie van Deventer from Drakenstein Municipality extended a warm welcome to everyone and said we should use Africa month as an opportunity to celebrate our African Heritage. During his informative speech, the Director for Heritage, Museums and Geographical Names Service, Mxolisi Dlamuka, said, “Africa Day is a day where we reflect what it means to be African and we celebrate our diversity, we all belong to Africa and Africa is our home.”

DCAS Minister Anroux Marais said, “It is envisaged that Africa month initiatives will strengthen the social-economic and political integration of the continent and the region.”

Africa has a rich and diverse heritage and is a key partner for development. Come celebrate our dynamic opportunities and achievements. Let us inspire a united sense of African Pride, BETTER TOGETHER.
