Minister Anroux Marais' Speech at Official Opening of Upgraded Hangberg Library

3 March 2016

All protocol observed

Good morning, molweni, goeiemore

It gives me great pleasure to be a part of the official opening of the upgraded Hangberg Library today.

It is a strategic objective of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport to support and enhance library services to all in the Western Cape.

This upgrade indeed contributes to our vision of a socially inclusive, creative, active and connected Western Cape. I am especially pleased with the easy access for people living with disabilities as it enables an open society for all. It creates a society in which all afforded the opportunity to personally empower themselves, contributes to lifelong learning, and provides for cultural enrichment and the prospects of economic prosperity.  All these and more are offered at libraries across the province, yet this library is a special one. Known to many for its community outreach focus, Hangberg Library has and will continue to be a beacon of hope to all who make use of it. It not only houses books and but avails internet services, current affairs resources and other services required to improve educational outcomes and opportunities for youth development.

I encourage you to make full use of all the services made available to you through this library and take care of it because this is your library, it is not the Western Cape Government’s or the City of Cape Town’s, but it belongs to the community of Hangberg.

I thank you.
