Eden District Receives R1 460 000 For Promotion And Development Of Sport

On Tuesday, 12 April 2016 the Eden District received R1 460 000 from the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) at a cheque handover ceremony that took place in the Ladismith Town Hall.

The money, divided among 32 sport federations, is given in an attempt to enhance sporting activities within the district. Recipients of the funds include Eden Baseball, Eden Bowls, Eden Boxing, Eden Cycling, Eden Darts, Eden Fencing, Eden Jukskei, Eden Kickboxing, Eden Lifesaving, Eden Netball, Eden Posduif Unie, Eden SAFA, Eden Sailing, Eden Table Tennis , Eden Tug of War, SC Golf (Women), SKGODU (Domino Union), Southern Cape Light Tackle Boat, SWD Aquatics, SWD Athletics, SWD Biathlon, SWD Chess, SWD Cricket Board, SWD Golf Union, SWD Hockey, SWD Majorettes Association, SWD Rugby, SWD Shore Angling, SWD Snooker, SWD Squash, Eden Modern Pentathlon and Eden Karate.

Eden District Municipality’s Executive Mayor, Wessie van der Westhuizen, welcomed everyone present and said: “We believe that sport creates a healthy body and spirit. I believe that with this money, we will save the lives of our young people.”

Minister Anroux Marais also addressed the attendees at the event and said: “Through sport we find a sense of belonging that includes people from different cultural backgrounds, mother tongues and even political affiliations. The allocation of this money will undoubtedly promote sport in order to contribute towards the reconciliation and development of the Western Cape community through the provision of equitable, accessible and affordable sport facilities, programmes and services. It will also promote school sport by assisting with structures, competitions, talent identification, development, as well as specific and next-level activities.”

DCAS supports sporting federations with funding. The funds should be used to develop and grow local sporting talent in our communities. Let us continue to grow our sporting talent BETTER TOGETHER.
