Cape Town Cycle tour – Provincial Disaster Centre to be activated

1 March 2016

The Western Cape Disaster Management Centre will be activated on Sunday for the 2016 Cape Town Cycle Tour.

The Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell, says the centre will be utilized as a joint operational centre for the operational activities of the event.

“The Western Cape’s state of the art disaster management centre and our highly skilled team of officials are ready to assist in another successful rendition of the world’s biggest timed cycle event. We were disappointed last year when the event had to be changed at the last minute due to the impact of an eventful fire season. This year we are – thankfully - not foreseeing similar challenges.”

Colin Deiner, the head of Disaster Management in the Western Cape, says the disaster management centre provides a single environment where all disaster management activities can be planned for and co-ordinated in an integrated manner.

“Due to the size of the Cycle Tour and the number of different roleplayers involved, the Provincial Disaster Management Centre has been utilized since 2007 as a Joint Operational Centre. We look forward to hosting the various critical stakeholders involved in running the Cycle tour again.
