Roadworks in Cogmanskloof between Ashton and Montagu
A plan is in place to make up for lost time on a 36-month Department of Transport and Public Works contract to rehabilitate and upgrade various sections of the R60 and R62 between Ashton and Montagu through Cogmanskloof. Work on the R583 million contract is expected to be completed on schedule towards the end of 2018.
Work is under way at the following sites:
- The road through Montagu,
- The Swellendam intersection (temporary widening),
- The Ashton Bridge, Boy Retief Bridge (in Cogmanskloof) and Voortrekker Bridge (at the western entrance to Montagu), and
- Aasvoëlkrans in Cogmanskloof (rock blasting).
General traffic management
Approximately 7 000 vehicles travel through Ashton and 3 600 through Cogmanskloof and Montagu every day.
Long Street in Montagu is closed to westbound traffic between Voortrekker Bridge and Church Street, as well as between Cross Street and the Van der Merwe Bridge. Westbound traffic has been diverted along Van Riebeeck Street all the way to the Voortrekker Bridge.
A long-term stop/ go control is in place to facilitate temporary storage of blasted rock on one side of the road at Aasvoëlkrans, as well as for road widening being done beyond this point.
The blasting at Aasvoëlkrans commenced on 12 January 2016 and the pass is closed completely for blasting every Tuesday and Thursday from 11am to 1pm.
