Conviction of Corrupt cops Welcomed

9 February 2016

Statement by Dan Plato, Western Cape Minister of Community Safety

I welcome the conviction of two Worcester police officials on corruption counts yesterday as a clear sign that the police will not tolerate any form of bribery or corruption within their own ranks.

The officers, who originally pleaded not guilty on the charges in 2013, solicited money in return for confiscated drugs, and for not pressing charges of possession against a truck-driver and his employer.

It remains despicable that those who are meant to uphold the rule of law and remain beyond reproach would even consider bringing the name of the police into disrepute and to tarnish the hard work being done on a daily basis by the dedicated men and women in blue who serve our communities diligently.

The Western Cape Government has a zero tolerance stance towards corruption in our province and we welcome the clampdown from the SAPS on illegal activities by those who are supposed to serve the residents of the Western Cape.

Crime does not pay and corruption has no place in our society. I urge anyone in the Western Cape to report any incidence of corruption, especially suspected corrupt activities by law enforcement agencies, to their nearest police station or anonymously to CrimeLine on 08600 10111.

When all good men and women living in every community in the province speak out and stand up against illegal activities and corruption, we will win the battle against the corruption that is plaguing our society.
