One pedestrian killed in Worcester this weekend

Provincial Traffic Services stopped a total of 2 669 vehicles in 26 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the province from 5 to 7 February 2016. Alcohol breath-testing was performed on 1 843 drivers and 20 were arrested. The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Somerset West. At 1.28 mg of alcohol/ 1 000 ml of breath, this is over five times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/ 1 000 ml.

In addition, a total of 332 vehicles were screened for speeding and 76 speeding offences were recorded. A total of 244 fines in the amount of R339 750 were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver fitness violations to vehicle fitness infringements of the law.

Three other arrests were also reported – one of an illegal immigrant in Mossel Bay, one for possession of drugs, and one for obstructing a traffic officer in the execution of duty in Swellendam. The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.

The highest speeds were recorded on the N1 in the Beaufort West service area (162 km/h in a 120 km/h zone), on the N2 in the Swellendam service area (141 km/h in a 100 km/h zone), on the N2 in the Somerset West service area (112 km/h in an 80km/h zone) and on the N2 in the Knysna service area (85 km/h in a 60 km/h zone).

Motorists can make themselves and others safer by buckling up in the front and back at all times, driving carefully and considerately, and always remaining within the speed limit.
