Rehabilitation of the R43 between Worcester and Wyzersdrift

4 February 2016

A Department of Transport and Public Works contract to rehabilitate Main Road 298 on the R43 between Worcester and Wyzersdrift, including a section through Rawsonville, is approximately 30% complete. Work on the R227 million contract commenced in April 2015 and is expected to be completed towards the end of 2017.

So far, approximately 5 km of road have been repaired and resurfaced, and approximately 3 km of road between Worcester and Rawsonville have been rehabilitated or reconstructed.

Work to widen the Breede River Bridge is proceeding well. The widening of the bridge piers is approximately 90% complete and the first new beams were placed on the bridge in December 2015. The bridge will be closed at the end of February 2016 when the next set of beams is laid.

During January 2015, work commenced on completely rehabilitating the main road through Rawsonville. This will include the relocation of services and the installation of storm water pipes.

Although much of the contract requires one-way stop-go traffic control measures, this has been limited to reduce delays during the harvest season.

Contract expenditure to date is R44.7 million, including R5.8 million for targeted enterprises. A total of 11 000 person-days of work have been created so far for 152 people from the Breede Valley municipal area.
