Media Alert: Opening of Sport Academy Office in Bredasdorp

11 November 2015

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) will be hosting the official opening of the Overberg District Sport Academy Office in partnership with the Cape Agulhas Municipality and Overberg Sport. The opening will take place in Bredasdorp on Thursday 12 November 2015 from 18:00 – 19:00 at the Glaskasteel Sport Complex Hall.

This initiative is based on a concept to develop excellence in sport through the coordination and facilitation of services for participants at Local, District, Regional, Provincial, National and International level. The development of athletes, coaches and administrators will provide an opportunity to promote sporting excellence in the various districts.

The sport codes included for the Overberg District Academy System are: Equestrian, Boxing, Netball, Karate, Kickboxing, Jukskei, Softball, Tug of War, Disability Sports, Gymnastics, Football and Cycling.

The Academy aims to promote talented athletes by providing sport science, medical services and training opportunities for athletes, coaches, administrators and technical staff in line with a coordinated national plan. This will assist in addressing the demographics of national teams by improving the development of talented athletes from disadvantaged communities.

Anroux Marais, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, is passionate about developing the sporting talents of youth. “We need to invest in our youth and make sure that they are given the opportunities to grow and showcase their talents. Bredasdorp is an area where we especially need to give youth opportunities to participate in activities which keep them away from social ills. Through participation in sport they can feel like a part of a team and learn the skills to become successful, well-rounded adults.” she said.

All media are invited to attend.
