Media Statement: SAPS handling of student protests to be probed, Police Ombudsman confirms

The Western Cape Government has received confirmation from the provincial Police Ombudsman, Advocate Vusi Pikoli, that his office is initiating an investigation into SAPS handling of the #FeesMustFall protests this week.

We call on students who have alleged mistreatment by SAPS to come forward and assist the Ombudsman investigation. Members of the public can contact the office of the Police Ombudsman to report complaints related to policing on: 021 483 0669 or ombudsman@westerncape.gov.za

Earlier, Premier Zille was with Stellenbosch University students where she engaged them for at least 2 hours.

“Students are rightfully angry about university affordability. They expressed concern about how SAPS has dealt with protests. The Police Ombudsman investigation is an opportunity for students to come forward with their complaints. The Community Safety Department also has “watching briefs” teams monitoring all court cases involving student protestors,” said Zille.

We support the students' right to march in a peaceful and orderly manner.
