Thirteen Road Traffic Fatalities on Western Cape Roads

On 16 and 17 October 2015, Western Cape Provincial Traffic Services stopped a total of 1 859 vehicles in 25 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the province. Thirteen road users died on the province’s roads over the weekend.

A total of 1 595 drivers were screened for being under the influence of alcohol and 17 arrests were made.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Somerset West. At 1.38 mg of alcohol/ 1 000 ml of blood, this is five times the legal limit of 0,24 mg/1 000 ml.

A total of 1 994 vehicles were screened for speeding and 332 speeding offences were recorded. A total of 192 fines in the amount of R264 100 were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver fitness to vehicle fitness infringements of the law.

The highest recorded speeds were:

• 172 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell area.
• 117 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the N7 in the Vredendal service area.
• 89 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the N2 in the Knysna service area.

Two other arrests were made:

• Two intoxicated pedestrians were arrested in Vredendal.

Ceres – 2 passengers
Stellenbosch – 1 motorcyclist
Villiersdorp – 1 driver
