Twelve Killed on Western Cape Roads This Weekend

On 9 and 10 October 2015, Western Cape Provincial Traffic Services stopped a total of 1 750 vehicles in 24 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the province. Twelve road users died on the province’s roads over the weekend.

A total of 1 083 drivers were screened for being under the influence of alcohol and 29 arrests were made.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Worcester. At 1.01 mg of alcohol/ 1 000 ml of blood, this is four times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.

A total of 3 099 vehicles were screened for speeding and 440 speeding offences were recorded. A total of 199 fines in the amount of R237 600 were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver fitness to vehicle fitness infringements of the law.

Highest Recorded Speeds

• 170 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Beaufort West service area.
• 154 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N2 in the Swellendam service area.
• 114 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the N2 in the Mossel Bay service area.
• 81 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the N2 in the Knysna service area.

Eight Other Arrests

• Two in connection with impoundments in Somerset West.
• One in connect with impoundment in George.
• One drunken pedestrian arrest in Knysna.
• Two drunken pedestrian arrests in Vredendal.
• One for false documentation in Worcester.
• One for excessive speed in Swellendam.
