Road User Education and Awareness during October Transport Month

2 October 2015

During October, the Department of Transport and Public Works and key road safety agencies will be running various road user safety campaigns at taxi ranks in Worcester, Cape Town, Bellville and Paarl.

Road users participating in these October Transport Month campaigns will learn about good road safety habits and find out more about interventions to reduce road fatalities and injuries in the Western Cape.

Stakeholders supporting these events include:

Partners will be demonstrating their services and distributing road safety pamphlets and disposable alcohol breath-testing equipment on the day.

Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa says it is important to create as much road safety awareness as possible among road users and pedestrians.

“We will continue with our efforts to bring about a reduction in road deaths. These interventions form part of our strategy to improve driver and pedestrian behaviour. All road users carry a responsibility for road safety,” he said.

The Department will also be working to improve awareness of drinking and driving, learner transport safety, child pedestrian safety, and seatbelt use.

It appeals to all road users to follow the rules, and to set an example of responsible behaviour at all times.

The Department is hoping to see a decrease in road traffic fatalities, particularly pedestrians, during October and in every other month of the year.
