Road Construction during Hermanus Whale Festival

The Department of Transport and Public Works is urging road users travelling to the Hermanus Whale Festival to be patient and exercise caution when using the R43 between Bot River and Sandbaai and the R320 Hemel en Aarde road between Hermanus and Caledon.

Road construction is currently under way on these routes.

There will be no closures or construction work between Bot River and Sandbaai this weekend. On the Hemel en Aarde road, existing stop/go closures will be maintained over the weekend, but no construction will be taking place.

Public Safety and Convenience

The safety and convenience of the travelling public are of utmost importance in any road construction project. External contractors are required to take all reasonable measures to facilitate the flow of traffic wherever there are road works. In addition, contractors are required to make use of approved safety procedures when moving equipment and vehicles on public roads.

Every effort will be made this weekend to ensure that all temporary road signs, cones, flagmen/ women and speed controls are maintained and effective, and that workers are courteous at all times.

Traffic Law Enforcement

The Average Speed Over Distance (ASOD) system on the N2 highway between Steenbras and Houw Hoek has already significantly reduced speeding on that stretch of road.

Provincial traffic officers will be on high alert and will be showing zero tolerance for any breach of traffic safety laws.
