Four Killed on Western Cape Roads This Weekend

Between 25 and 27 September 2015, Western Cape Provincial Traffic Services stopped a total of 2 998 vehicles in 24 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the province.

Four road users died on the province’s roads over the weekend.

A total of 1 460 drivers were screened for being under the influence of alcohol and 58 arrests were made.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Vredenburg. At 1.21 mg of alcohol/ 1 000 ml of blood, this is five times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.

A total of 2 106 vehicles were screened for speeding and 370 speeding offences were recorded. A total of 229 fines in the amount of R321 800 were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver fitness to vehicle fitness infringements of the law.

Highest Recorded Speeds:

  • 175 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Beaufort West service area.
  • 129 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the R62 in the Oudtshoorn service area.
  • 112 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the N2 in the Knysna service area.

Nine Other Arrests:

  • Two reckless and negligent driving arrests in George.
  • One excessive speed arrest in Beaufort West.
  • Three in connection with impoundments in Vredenburg.
  • One intoxicated pedestrian arrest in Vredendal.
  • One false documentation arrest in George.
  • One arrest for bribery in George.

Four road fatalities were reported:

Greater Cape Metropole

  • Potsdam – 1 male motor cyclist
  • Athlone – 1 male driver
  • Macassar – 1 male driver

Winelands / Overberg

  • Worcester – 1 male driver
