Tragic Crash on N2 Claims Seven Lives

12 September 2015

Statement by Donald Grant, Minister of Transport and Public Works

Last night (11 September 2015), at around 18:50, a bakkie travelling along the N2 near Riversdale collided head on with a light motor vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. The horrific crash claimed the lives of seven people – three from the bakkie and an entire family in the light motor vehicle, a mother, father and their two sons.

According to investigation reports, the bakkie overtook a truck driver, who witnessed the incident. According to the truck driver, the bakkie was driving behind him in the direction of Cape Town. The light motor vehicle was travelling towards Riversdale. The bakkie overtook the truck and the light motor vehicle flashed its headlights at it.

The driver of the bakkie continued and collided head one with the light motor vehicle. Early investigations suggest that human error may have played a role in this horrific crash.

I should like to extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those that have lost their lives. Our traffic officials will assist the South African Police Service (SAPS) in its investigation.

We will continue to work tirelessly, in partnership with the citizens of this province, to make our roads safer together. Deaths on our roads are not only tragic and unfortunate, but can be significantly reduced through responsible driver behaviour, road use, and complete adherence to road traffic signs and rules.

We appeal to all road users to follow the rules, and to set an example of responsible behaviour at all times.

People’s lives are at stake.
