Thirty-six Arrested for Drinking and Driving on Western Cape Roads This Weekend

From 4 to 6 September 2015, Provincial Traffic Services stopped a total of 2 251 vehicles in 22 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape. Three road users died on the province’s roads this weekend.

A total of 1 299 drivers were screened for being under the influence of alcohol and 36 arrests were made.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Caledon. At 1.16 mg/ 1 000 ml, this is four times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/ 1 000 ml.

A total of 3 376 vehicles were screened for speeding and 668 speeding offences were recorded. A total of 184 fines in the amount of R 238 700 were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver fitness to vehicle fitness.

Highest Speeds Recorded

  • 167 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell service area.
  • 132 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N2 in the Swellendam service area.
  • 95 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the N1 in the Worcester service area.
  • 90 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the N2 in the Knysna service area.

Nine Other Arrests

  • One reckless and negligent driving arrest in Somerset West.
  • One intoxicated pedestrian arrest in Vredendal.
  • Two impounded vehicles arrests in Knysna.
  • Three impounded vehicles arrests in Mossel Bay.
  • Two impounded vehicles arrests in Somerset West.

  • Beaufort West – One male driver and one female passenger.

Winelands / Overberg

  • Steenbrasdam, Grabouw – One female passenger.
