From 28 to 30 August 2015, Provincial Traffic Services stopped a total of 2 366 vehicles in 22 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape. Fourteen road users died on the province’s roads this weekend.
A total of 1 455 drivers were screened for being under the influence of alcohol and 23 arrests were made.
The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Vredenburg at 1.02 mg/1 000 ml. This is four times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.
A total of 756 vehicles were screened for speeding and 116 speeding offences were recorded. A total of 201 fines in the amount of R268 300 were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver fitness to vehicle fitness.
