Media Alert: MOD Centres to Receive isiXhosa Chess Booklet

On Tuesday, 18 August 2015, the Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marias will be handing over isiXhosa chess booklets to schools who offer chess as part of the after-school and Mass Participation, Opportunity and Access, Development and Growth (MOD) Programme.

The chess booklet, the first of its kind, was launched in July 2015. Author Watu Kobese identified a need for a booklet in isiXhosa and worked together with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport to develop the isiXhosa terminology for chess pieces and moves, a first of its kind initiative.

4 MOD centres will be in attendance to receive the booklets - Sopokama Primary School (Metro North), Masipumulela Primary School (Metro East), Nomlinganiselo Primary School (Metro South) and Hazendal Primary (Metro Central).

Minister Marais said that this booklet will make it easier for children to master the game of chess. “Children will now be able to learn about the sport in their home language. This is one of the ways in which my department ensures that all children get an equal opportunity to take part and grow their talents.” she said.
