Twelve Killed on Western Cape Roads This Weekend

From 14 to 16 August 2015, Provincial Traffic Services stopped a total of 2 411 vehicles in 25 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape. Twelve road users died on the province’s roads this weekend.

A total of 1 298 drivers were screened for being under the influence of alcohol and 17 arrests were made.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Worcester. At 1.23 mg/1 000 ml, this is five times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000ml.

A total of 3001 vehicles were screened for speeding and 331 speeding offences were recorded. A total of 237 fines in the amount of R262 050 were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver fitness to vehicle fitness.

Highest Speeds Recorded:

  • 176 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell service area.
  • 96 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the R62 in the Oudtshoorn area.

Three Arrests:

  • One stolen vehicle arrest in Laingsburg.
  • One dagga arrest in Swellendam.
  • One falsified licence disk arrest in Swellendam.

  • Oudtshoorn – 1 passenger.

West Coast

  • Citrusdal – 1 pedestrian.

Greater Cape Metropole:

  • Belhar – 1 driver.

West Coast:

  • Riebeeck West – 1 driver.

Winelands/Overberg:

  • Franschhoek – 1 passenger.
  • Villiersdorp – 1 motor cyclist.
