Good Progress with Resurfacing of R27

The Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works is making good progress with resurfacing the R27 between Milnerton and Melkbosstrand. This R71 million project started in April 2015, and is scheduled for completion early in 2016.

Edge break repairs and the supplementation of gravel shoulders between Melkbosstrand Road and Tryall Road intersections have been completed. The milling and backfilling of patches for base repairs on the southbound carriageway between Tryall Road and Racecourse Road intersections are also finished. 

The resurfacing of the southbound carriageway between Marine Drive and Bay Beach Avenue has commenced on the approach to Blaauwberg Road intersection on the southbound carriageway. Various maintenance and repair works will continue on the sides and shoulders of the road. Mole barriers are being installed in the vicinity of Marine Drive intersection.

General traffic accommodation

For their own safety and that of construction workers, motorists are asked to drive carefully to obey all traffic instructions including speed limits. Road conditions change daily and motorists should be vigilant where construction is in process.

Empowerment

The Department is creating a number of employment opportunities through the project. A total of 8% of the contract value is expected to go to targeted enterprises in the Western Cape, and 7 000 person-days of work will be created during the upgrade.
