Eighteen Road Traffic Fatalities on Western Cape Roads

From 7 to 10 August 2015, Provincial Traffic Services stopped a total of 2 933 vehicles in 26 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape. Eighteen road users, including nine pedestrians, died on the province’s roads over the long weekend.

A total of 1 888 drivers were screened for being under the influence of alcohol and 21 arrests were made.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Somerset West. At 1.03mg/1 000ml, this is four times the legal limit of 0,24mg/1 000ml.

A total of 459 vehicles were screened for speeding and 87 speeding offences were recorded. A total of 248 fines in the amount of R359 950 were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver fitness to vehicle fitness.

Highest speeds recorded:

  • 159 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Beaufort West service area.
  • 135 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N2 in the Caledon service area.
  • 113km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the N2 in the Knysna service area.
  • 92 km/h in a 70 km/h zone on the N2 in the Knysna service area.
  • 98km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the R62 in the Oudtshoorn service area.

Two arrests:

  • One impoundment arrest in Caledon.
  • One arrest for intimidating a traffic officer in Brackenfell.
